SUPER POWER IN THE MAKING!
LIFE IN A METRO: MUMBAI TODAY
- Edmond Fernandes
RUN ! RUN ! RUN ! all we notice is someone or the other running around for something or the other.Kids run to catch their bus, office goers to catch their trains, buses, all in all, a rat race of the millennium at its peak. This city is rapidly changing its face, the rich segment get richer with each passing day while the poor just advance in their poverty. Darwin’s theory of survival perhaps is best dedicated to Mumbai.
I had recently been to Mumbai for a Christmas break after 1 long year. I found myself dazzled in a state of semi-shock. Just a year through & so much has changed! First thing I noticed, rather which flashed to my eyes, was the steep rise in population. The places I once travelled with ease were all overcrowded. Modern high rise have replaced the amateur small shops. More & more people are becoming homeless & taking to the streets. The agony is rising & infinite. My friends, have we lost it ???
Humanity is nowhere on the picture. Just donkey work to steal a living. Family life has lost its worth & moreover fewer people even experience it. Priorities have changed, we aint getting anywhere !!! building malls and shopping outlets with state of the art constructions won’t solve the problems to help living conditions improve. Seldom do we come across men who really live life, the way it is supposed to be lived. How many people are honestly happy ! how many find their tranquility ? so much so how many of us give the heavens above more than just a passing glance?
Recently I met a friend of mine who is currently Managing Director of a shipping company. He portrays a classical example of toughness & burnout like any other fellow mumbaikar. No time to rest, and works also on Sunday. He added that balancing family & job priority is pretty tough, his son wants a trip aboard always, wants a new car etc .. which according to him was impractical. Few of you, might agree saying that a person of his stature should work to make ends meet & to have a good night’s sleep. But let me tell you dear friends, working at the cost of life and its precious is of no use. We need to strike a fine balance between work & leisure. You may be anyone under the sun but you occasionally need to step back in order to step forward steadfastly again. After all its one life..why not make it sweet !
Remember one thing, everyone reading this , doing justice to work/study & pleasure this is to have succeeded. I don’t know where Mumbai stands 10 years from now, considering the current scenario where stress levels are rising, inflation increasing, job guarantee steeply reducing & so it goes. . but one thing is certain, if we don’t find time for ourselves and our very own; we are heading for disaster. True Bombay is expanding on various fronts but the basic principles of humanity is lost. Spirituality is taking a backseat & nature is hitting hard, especially during the monsoons. We have reached a point in history where we are leading multinationals, but misleading men. Its time we think of solutions to combat our situation critical from the hideous ruins which we have created.
Our concrete jungle, the financial hub of India is being trespassed by counter terrorism , crime etc. we should focus on ways to improve in all dimensions rather than seek political and personal gains, point fingers at fellow Indians creating statewise bias, disturbing communal harmony and many more. After all it is our city, we should work for its betterment rather than destroy it due to our selfish ulterior motives!
