Woman tortured for failing to conceive
Mumbai: The police registered a case against the in-laws of a 24-year-old Dharavi woman after years of assault and humiliation. Officials said the woman, who was married to their son six-years ago, could not conceive and ever since the in-laws would vent out their frustration on her by beating her apart from demanding Rs 2 lakh.
According to the Dharavi police, Sarita married Naresh Kunchikokhe around six years ago. However, as the couple failed to have a child, it led to frequent squabbles between her and the in-laws. As time passed, these spats turned into assaults.
In connection with the incident, Shanta Saiyappa (43), sarita’s mother said. “During their marriage six years ago, we apid Rs 5 lakh along with 10 tolas of gold to her in-laws, Saraswati (40) and Narasanna. However, their greed did not stop there and they started torturing and assauting her for Rs 2 lakh more.”
An officer of Dharavi police said, “Sarita’s in-laws purposely had a verbal spat with her on a petty issue and then they along with the victim’s 16-year-old sister-in-law Shanti assaulted her at their residence located in Vijay Nagar slums in Dharavi. When some neighbours tried to intervene, they too were manhandled. “Soon after, Sarita’s family approached Dharavi police and filed a case. The victim has been admitted to Sion Hospital with head and body injuries, where she is recuperating.
Alleging that Sarita’s husband was a drunkard and gambler, the victim’s family said, “While he stayed away from the house the whole day the in-laws would torture her. They would make Sarita share her bed with their pet dog.”
Senior inspector Hemant Patil of Dharavi police said a case had been filed and the matter was being looked into.

Shushila, a Class 3 student, was studying at Adivasi Kanya Ashram in Shahdol and living in the school hostel. The latest incident reportedly took place on Jan. 4 when hostel superintendent Anita Sant took Shushila from her hostel room to her office and subjected her to torture.
“At 8 pm she came and took me to her office room and hit me with iron rods,” a frightened Shushila said.
The incident came to light when the victim’s mother saw the burn marks on Sushila’s body on Jan.7 on her returning home.
“While bathing her, I saw several burn marks on her body,” said Shushila’s mother Sita Singh Gaud.Shushila, a Class 3 student, was studying at Adivasi Kanya Ashram in Shahdol and living in the school hostel.
