EDITOR'S COLUMN

Friends

Yes, we are truly into monsoon. Despite Met people saying, there shall be less of rain, its been in plenty at times and at some places. But its been erratic, there is no cry of despair from farming community, which means, they are not unhappy, at least as of now. Overall, lets hope it may not be bad after all.
Being in August, it’s a reminder of the most important national day of the country. Yes this 15th Aug. shall remind us that we shall be all of 68 years as a politically free country. Its also a reminder that this political freedom did not bring with it other equally important freedoms. While it is true that from 1947 to 2015, there has been progress of all kinds to all people. But the fact remains that despite creating many billionaires at least half the population suffers from serious inequity of developmental iniquities. 12 developmental plans, although well intentioned, left a huge population untouched, be it hunger, housing, health, sanitation etc.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his first address as the defecto head of the state, from the ramparts of Red Fort had declared that “We the nation of 125 crores can find solutions to our daunting problems”. But his 15 months’ stewardship of the country has failed to sustain the hope that he generated. There have been, no doubt, positive developments, but not comparable to his stirring rhetoric on 15th Aug. 2014. He is a decisive leader, but has somehow could not translate his visions of a better India due varieties of reasons – some within his control, some beyond his control.
He needs to recognise, that managing a huge country like India with its multi-dimensional problems is not going to be easy as compared to managing a state. Hope his coming address on 15th August shall be more realistic.
In Month-in-Perspective, we have tried to cover whatever we could within the space constraints. This means many issues of relevance were left out of our editorial orbit. The deteriorating law and order problem in U.P is one, where a senior police officer filed an FIR against a minister as well as taken on U.P strongman Mulayam Singh Yadav. Farmer’s suicides in Karnataka, or the tragedy in Andhra Pradesh, never ending problems of separatists in J.K, are some of the issues remained to be touched.
We were wondering what we shall cover under Focus. A report in the Free Press Journal, a Mumbai based English daily “HEROES IN ENGLAND ZEROS AT HOME’ forced us to think on issues out of box. It was the writings on Blind men’s Cricket victory in London, touted as World Cup that Indian team won but how our Mai-Baap of cricket in India-BCCI-treated them, disturbed us greatly. We have therefore taken it up under Focus, for the sheer relevance of the points raised therein. Hope our readers would find it interesting. Rest are as usual. Do revert with your inputs, if any. We do value them.
