Dark, Naked Reality
“Change the changeable, accept the unchangeable, and remove your self from the unchangeable.”
Denis Whitt
The medical science of the west which we also call as modern medicine has nothing modern about it neither has very little useful for mankind in it.
With the latest study from the Mass General Hospital showing that while nearly 90% of the specialist cardiologists were away in their college meetings and away from their great responsibility death and disability rates fell down in seriously ill patients in intensive care units, thanks to the divine interventionalists not being there damaging the patients' health! This fits in with the views of one of their leaders, Harlan Krumholz, lamenting that most cardiac interventions in the USA (copied with more vigour in India) are done for money and not for patient benefit in an editorial accompanying a study that showed that between Philadelphia and Ontario with similar demographics the cardiac intervention rates were 1:10 in favour of USA. Despite that, at the end of five years, there were more people alive in Ontario in that cohort than in Philadelphia! One can go on and on as there are many more studies both in the USA and other countries when doctors went on strike society’s health improved and mortality and morbidity fell down significantly.
I have planned a study of per capita mortality in two slots, 1930-1970 and 1970-2010 in the same hospitals in USA, England and India for which I am making all out efforts at the moment. My hunch is that there will be a significant worsening of the mortality and morbidity rates in the second slot compared to the first as happened at the Christy’s Hospital in Manchester in one disease-Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia-in the last century. The medical students and the doctors, even teachers, are not aware of the misleading but materialistic reductionist science of western medicine which treats the human body as an open system (in systems biology) where it needs outside intervention for every deviation in the body physiology howsoever trivial it might be. There is a pill for every ill is the bija mantra here.
Human body, on the contrary, is a closed system with a powerful healer inside who looks after most, if not all ills, called the immune system. Interventions here might not be a good idea in many situations. That is precisely why interventions many times lead to disaster. Some other interventions might not be immediately dangerous but in the long run they do more harm than good, one good example is revascularisation efforts in asymptomatic patients. Even the germ theory and the advent of antibiotics has not been such a blessing as is made out. We have landed ourselves in a catch 22 situation with super bugs ruling the roost in the present hospital set ups forcing us in desperate situations to go back to nature like in the case of faecal transplants etc. Even in other areas antibiotics have been a bane. Materialistic science has sold its soul to the devil and fails to see many things in nature that are our own and are there for our own good. Western science thinks that it is the responsibility of science to even meddle with nature. Science primarily is to try and understand how nature works. If science tries to teach nature a lesson or two like in genetic engineering in food production etc nature will teach us a very bad lesson sooner than later, if it has not already done so.
King of sciences, quantum physics, has come so close to the Sanatana dharma that most leading physicists from Max Planck, Einstein, Heisenberg, Pauli, Durr, Schrodinger, Niels Bohr, and many others have almost become philosophers. In the new science the human body comes under the closed system where the human mind is the only one that matters; the body does not matter at all. Consciousness is fundamental and all else is derived from it. If one knows how to keep his/her mind under control the body’s health gets corrected. The immune system here becomes the inner healer where outside interference is limited to “cure rarely, comfort mostly but to console always.” Yoga, meditation, and pranayama hold the prime place in human healing. Ayurveda is staging a come back. Sadly real good Ayurveda is no longer extant in India; most teaching colleges teach modern medicine on the sly. Little do they realize the harm they are doing not only to their students but the society at large. Reality in human sciences is totally different from what the western science preaches, practices and teaches is elegantly shown by David Wiebers, a noted neuroscientist and teacher in his classic Theory of Reality.
Unfortunately the western materialistic science is so powerful monetarily to sell itself in the society. Those reformers will have a twin task on hand of teaching the new science to the future students (it is too late already) and the more arduous task of de-schooling society that there is no pill for every ill but there definitely is waiting to be followed by an ill for sure for every pill. Human greed is at the root of the misguided drive to keep human illness and its management under the grip of the materialistic western pseudo-science. Modernity has to be gauged against our own past and it need not be borrowed from the west or any other country. The right science of healing has to be encouraged by the powers that be for it to blossom. We need not have any class systems in human healing. Even the western reductionist science has some place in the management of emergencies and corrective surgery. Let us club that with the best in Ayurveda and other complementary systems for the good of mankind and also to make medicine reach the lowest of the low.
