EDITOR'S COLUMN

Friends
If October was the last month of 17th year completion, this month marks the beginning of 18th year for ISSUES & CONCERNS in the Indian print media. It was in November 2000, I&C was launched. Looking back over the labyrinth that the journal has traversed, its a profoundly mixed feeling of having survived the highly demanding journey.
It is true that we tried to live up to the expectation of our valued readers, and there are kind souls giving expression to such feelings which, truly speaking, keep us going. To ensure the continuity of the periodical, we had proposed the possible setting up of a co-operative society of readers, which will own the paper and ensure, God willing, its continuity and growth. As a seed money, we had requested our readers to become Permanent Members by paying Rs.10,000/-.We have been able to get 70 members, which include, some of our original life members so also those who are readers since only few years, but have responded to our proposal. That is clearly a recognition that ISSUES & CONCERNS should survive as a vibrant monthly. We are indeed grateful to all those who have become our Permanent Members, that 3 judicial luminaries- Justice Santhosh Hegde, Justice Hosbet Suresh and Justice Michael Saldanha- are in this list of 70 is a bonus and confirmation of the trust these honorable gentlemen have in I&C. However, we will fail in our duty if, we do not appreciate a gentleman who received only sample copies but, one pleasant evening had sent a cheque for Rs. 10,000/- as Permanent Member appreciating the journey of I&C. Mr. Vijay S. Amin, who is a lawyer by profession is a parent of a single child.  We had presented his family picture in I&C under a column “Making a Difference” by having just one child how he is serving silently, the nation. He is part of a family of 5 siblings, all brothers.
What is unique about this family is, all 5 brothers have only one child each, some girls and some boys. And pleasantly all their children are very successful in their chosen career, parents having given their concentrated best to their single child. These families of 5+5+5 need to be publicly honored for their responsible response to India’s ever growing population problem. The issue of POPULATION CONTROL has always been close to I&C, as  the mother of all problems. We have discussed it at least 17 times in our journey of 212 editions. Hence, for us at I&C it would be a privilege to meet this 5 Amin brothers. As compared to this Mr.Amin, we have scores of long time members whose subscription has expired over 2 years ago. Yet we continued to send them I&C for whole of 2 years only because, they came in when we needed paid readers initially. But sadly having received and read I&C for 17 years for just a 1000 rupees, they still have not renewed the subscription nor have said-‘no, do not send’. That was rather disappointing. Support of Nitte Group Chairman Dr.N.Vinay Hegde and Mr. Ram L. Shriyan of Ramco Group, Lome, Togo, in recent years, has been exemplary.
Month-in-Perspective has covered as much as it could with our incisive take on issues of relevance. There has been growing noise in the public space regarding the increasing demand by MPs to raise their pecuniary benefits all the time. With the intervention of apex court the shrill debate has continued. We thought of discussing the P3-Perks, Pays and Privileges of these MPs. We have tried to be detailed, although there is scope for greater details to make truly a case against this Oliver Tiwist dimension by MPs and MLAs to unrealistically go on raising their benefits without any reference to the national income or per capita income. Hope readers do find it interesting. Kindly revert with your inputs.
